Dr. Steve Scott
May 2010

Our May “Cyclist of the Month” is Dr. Steve Scott. Dr. Scott cares for very special patients at the Akron-Peninsula Veterinary Office. Dr. Scott is a veterinarian who likes all animals, but is a real fan of cats. You may have seen him out on the road sporting a license plate that reads “CAT DOC.”

Or perhaps you have seen him cycling through the Cuyahoga Valley. Cycling is Dr. Scott’s favorite pastime when he is not caring for our beloved pets. Dr. Scott started riding a bike around the age of 5 or 6. His very first bike was a Big Wheel. When he outgrew his Big Wheel, he favored BMX bikes. These days he enjoys both road and mountain biking. Dr. Scott recommends Reagan Park in Medina as an excellent place to mountain bike.

Dr. Scott enjoys the camaraderie of his friends, as he prepares for triathlons. He has already participated in triathlons held in Portage Lakes and Vermillion. He is looking forward to a triathlon being sponsored by the Akron General Wellness Center. Preparation for these events include training in swimming, running, as well as cycling. Clearly, the cycling part of these events, is the most enjoyable for Dr. Scott.

During the off-season, Dr. Scott maintains his enthusiasm for cycling through spinning at the Akron General Wellness Center. When asked if he had any advice for his fellow cyclists, Dr. Scott offered sound medical advice. He responded “it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring enough water for your ride.” He also stressed the importance of having something to eat, so as not to ride on an empty stomach…something light-such as a protein bar.

One of Dr. Scott’s most memorable rides took place in Maui, Hawaii. After riding a bus to the top of the Mt. Haleakala Volcano, he descended down on a mountain bike. Dr. Scott has also taken a bicycle tour of the Caribbean. He boarded a ship, which stopped at various islands including St. Lucia, St. Bart’s, and St. Thomas. Each time the ship docked, Dr. Scott and his companions would tour each island by bicycle.

Dr. Scott, originally from California, is very happy to be living in the greater Akron area. Dr. Scott maintains “that we are fortunate to have such a wonderful park system, including Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as well as the metro parks. These parks provide us with beautiful scenery.” Dr. Scott is impressed by the friendliness of the people in the Akron area.

Dr. Scott lives in Norton with his cat named Salem. In addition to biking, Dr. Scott also enjoys hiking, kayaking, reading and playing softball. It is clear that Dr. Scott has found many ways to enjoy adventure in the greater Akron area. Best of luck with your triathlon, Dr. Scott!
