Andrew Holland
July 2010

Andrew Holland is our July Cyclist of the Month. Andrew enjoys all types of cycling, including road and mountain biking. If you happen to cross paths with him, you may see him riding a tandem, a fixed gear, or a cyclocross. Andrew’s favorite route is not necessarily a structured ride. He’ll be travelling down the road, notice a trail…and off he goes to explore!

Andrew appreciates cycling for the “freedom” it allows him. He recalls that cycling provided him with his first transportation to go wherever he wanted to go. And he is still going! Cycling has taken Andrew all over the United States…”anywhere there is a dirt road!” Andrew’s most memorable trip was riding from Portland, Oregon to Crater Lake National Park. This beautiful route included three mountain passes, where one side of the mountain could be sunny, and as he passed through, the other side of the mountain would be rainy. Andrew adds, “If I died and went to heaven, it would have to be Bend, Oregon.” Bend, Oregon is another cycling destination of immense beauty.

In the world of cycling, there is no off-season for Andrew. Wintertime is the time to put Nokian studded tires on his bike. Andrew is on the Towpath year round. Andrew has this advice for his fellow cyclists: “Continue the advocacy in the Akron area, play by the rules, abide by the laws, but push the boundaries.” He would like to see cyclists continue commuting on their bikes, and working on trail conversion for mountain biking.

In addition to cycling, Andrew enjoys skiing, sailing, kayaking, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. He also spends time hiking the Mingo Trail, O’Neil Woods, the Gorge, and the Buckeye Trail. Being an active fan of many sports led Andrew to become one of the founding partners of GameSnake.com. GameSnake is a free online service that matches players with pickup games and teams in over 80 sports. GameSnake uses a player’s age, gender, location and sports preference to match him or her with games and teams happening on the courts, fields, and facilities in their area. GameSnake has also added features to cater to athletes with disabilities. GameSnake’s motto is “Can you come out and play?”

Andrew lives in the Wallhaven area of Akron with his two children, Nate and Kate. Andrew appreciates the resiliency of the residents of Akron. He likes where the greater Akron community is headed…economically and culturally. Andrew feels that we have a lot to be thankful for. We agree! Thanks, Andrew, for being our July Cyclist of the Month!
