Cassie Schumacher
May 2011
In a little over a month Cassie Schumaker will challenge herself to compete in the solo division of Race Across the West (RAW). RAW is an ultra cycling event which covers challenging desert and mountain terrain. Beginning in Oceanside, CA and finishing in Durango, CO, cyclists often sacrifice sleep and rest to complete the required course within time limits set forth by the organizers of RAW.

Through her participation, Cassie is combining her love of cycling with the opportunity to raise much needed funds for Veterans. Cassie is planning to donate the proceeds from this bike competition to Valor Home, a place planned to house homeless veterans. She has earmarked the funds to be specifically used for a Meditation Room, to help veterans cope with Post-traumatic stress disorder. Groundbreaking for Valor Home, which will be located in Akron, is planned for May 25, 2011. Cassie hopes to raise $5,000 for this very worthwhile cause. If you would like to help Cassie reach this goal, please visit her website at www.wheels4change.com.

Participating in RAW is not the first time Cassie has challenged herself. She has also competed in four Ironman Triathlons which combined bike riding, with running and swimming.

Cassie enjoys cycling in the valley. When asked why she enjoys cycling, her response was “riding a bike keeps me centered, keeps me well. I have no problems when I’m on my bike.” Cassie has also cycled in Kentucky, Florida, Wisconsin and New York…and as far away as Sweden.

Cassie had this advice to share with her fellow cycling enthusiasts…”Get with a group of people who have been cyclists for a while. Listen to them. Learn from them. Participate in tours.” She suggested finding tours on the Internet or through Ohio Bike Magazine.

Cassie lives in Highland Square with her cats, Frank and Sam. Cassie enjoys living in Akron because of the great biking around here. Best wishes to you Cassie in your upcoming cycling competition, and in your admirable goal to assist Valor Home!
