John Beck - May 2014

John Beck considers himself to be a recreational cyclist…with aspirations to commute. In the meantime, John carves out time in his busy schedule to enjoy riding on the Bike & Hike Trail and the Towpath Trail. “Riding a bike allows me to see a great deal of scenery in a short period of time,” shares John. John likes to use the Bike Aboard Program offered by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. “You can go so far north or south, hop aboard the train and buy a beer for two bucks,” according to John. Additionally, John is a frequent participant in Blimp City Bike & Hike’s Moon Rides, which take place during the full moon Fridays of warmer weather months.

When asked if he had any advice he would like to share with other cyclists, John offered, “I’m a firm believer in wearing helmets…in any active sport. They are important for your safety.” John also advises that cyclists should take care to maintain their bikes for optimum enjoyment, adding “if you are unable to maintain your bike, take your bike to Blimp City for the proper maintenance.”

John is a graduate student at the University of Akron and is looking forward to teaching secondary Math. When John isn’t taking classes, working or riding his bike, you might find him playing his guitar, doing volunteer work with members of his church or visiting his grandmother at Rockynol, a retirement community in Akron.

John lives in Akron and hopes to remain here. He feels a commitment to the area. John says, “Akron is home…always will be. I like the idea of improving your own community. I appreciate everything Akron has to offer including the Metroparks, and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I like the people and that we have seasonal change. I like to think that if I was from somewhere else, I would still have this appreciation for Akron.”

John, Blimp City Bike & Hike wishes you all the best in your teaching career and continued enthusiasm for the greater Akron area. You, and others that share your enthusiasm, are Akron’s greatest resources for Akron’s future!
